Inside the World of Quesada Cigars – w/ Manuel Quesada

In this exclusive conversation, Manuel Quesada shares insights from over 50 years in the cigar industry. The discussion touches on the roots of his family legacy, the significance of the Dominican Republic in premium cigar production, the philosophy of blending, and the importance of tradition in an evolving craft.

How did the journey in cigars begin?

Manuel explains that it began through his grandfather, who moved from Spain to Cuba and eventually to the Dominican Republic. The family originally traded tobacco as brokers before shifting in 1974 to manufacturing their own cigars. This marked the foundation of Quesada Cigars as it is known today.

"In 1974, we made the decision to go into cigar manufacturing. We faced challenges and had many beautiful moments."

What makes the Dominican Republic unique for cigar production?

According to Quesada, the Dominican Republic offers ideal conditions—fertile soil, seasoned expertise, and a culture of craftsmanship. It’s a place where passion for the leaf is deeply embedded in both the land and the people.

"We have the soil, the experience, and the passion to create cigars that compete with the best in the world."

What defines a great cigar?

A cigar, Quesada explains, should deliver a harmonious experience. It must transition smoothly from start to finish, like a well-composed story. Each part—the beginning, middle, and end—should feel connected and intentional.

"A cigar should never surprise you in a bad way. It should be harmonious from start to finish."

How is blending approached?

Blending, for Quesada, is about balance. Every component has to work together. No single leaf should dominate. When everything is in harmony, the cigar achieves its purpose.

"If one leaf screams louder than the others, it ruins the harmony."

How does one balance tradition with innovation?

Respect for the craft comes first. Quesada believes that a deep understanding of traditional methods is essential before pushing boundaries. Innovation is welcomed—but only once the fundamentals are mastered.

"You must learn the rules before you can break them."

What continues to drive passion after five decades?

For Quesada, it’s about people, creativity, and the ongoing evolution of the industry. He still finds joy in the process and in mentoring the next generation of cigar makers.

This conversation is a reminder that premium cigars are more than products—they’re stories shaped by hands, heritage, and heart.
